The Face Behind the Flyer #0524

One of my favourite elements that we introduced last year, has to be the designer flyers!! Working with members of The Little Makers Market family, to create unique marketing to shout about the events. This benefits us with beautiful marketing but also, helps us celebrate the incredible talent within our community.

It’s such an honour every month to work with such talented individuals to create new marketing materials to share digitally & locally! Being able to see their processes unfold, and learning more about them as people, as well as creative, is truly inspiring.

Springs have never looked so good with, this uniquely striking new May flyer from the talented Jasmine Ash Designs! Inspired by her love of interior design. Jasmine’s beautiful take on the brief showcases a stunning use of colour and shapes, and has got us swooning over this spring design! (Also, great name if I do say so myself)

What was your inspiration behind the design?

I take inspiration from lots of things, whether it’s beautiful scenery and nature or the things that are in my home like my kettle or a plant pot. I enjoy giving new life to things like that which are often boring and mundane. I also get lots of inspiration from looking in magazines, shops and online. I really love interior design and get lots of inspiration from the colours and patterns that people use.

Approximately how long did it take you?

The design took me approximately 2 days. I handmade the different elements out of paper, scanned them in and edited them digitally. Then I had to choose a font and how I wanted to lay it out. I spent a while just on finishing touches and deciding which colours worked best.

What’s your usual source of inspiration?

I got my inspiration for my design from all of the lovely things that are sold at the market. I had a look through some photographs taken at the markets and took inspiration from just some of the beautiful products that are sold, such as earrings, plants and ceramics.

How long have you been making?

I have been making for as long as I can remember. My mum always tells me stories of how she would keep a box of random things in our home and I would turn them into something new. My favourite subject at school was art and I continued studying it through to degree level. I think making and using my hands will always be something that brings me happiness, peace and calm.

How did you do it?

I love working by hand to begin with so I started off by using bits of old watercolour experiments to cut into different shapes. I wanted to capture the handmade essence of the market by making the main part of the design by hand. Once I had decided which cutouts I was happy with I used my scanner to scan them into my laptop and edit them. I removed the background and edited the colours slightly. Then I played around with the fonts, colour and layout until I was happy. This part did take me a while as I couldn’t decide on a background colour!

Describe your work?

I would describe my work as unique, colourful, feminine and full of texture. I use a range of media such as paper, watercolour, charcoal and ink. I think the best designs come from making and experimenting by hand and experiencing happy accidents and failures that inspire new, captivating ideas. I love working with colour and enjoy using abstract colours and shapes to tell unconventional stories. I think that's the beauty in art is that you can create a world that looks however you want it to.

What’s your goal for 2024?

My goal for 2024 is to put more time and effort into starting my career as an artist. Sadly, I think it is easy to forget about and stop doing as naturally life gets in the way. It is also difficult to not doubt yourself and your work when you are not receiving back the effort that you put in. This year I want to put in more time for art and hopefully one day make a living out of what I love to do.
